Post-holiday Cleanse

This post is oddly timed – relevant since I did just come back from holiday, but juxtaposed with my upcoming posts about all the amazing food and drinks we had in Spain. Alas, I suppose that means it proves its point 🙂

As much as I advocate for maintaining a healthy lifestyle while travelling, like in this post here, it is inevitable that you will indulge. Despite practices like morning site-seeing jogs, tromping around the city between museums, and even hotel room push-ups and sit-ups, holidays involve drinking and eating with the best of them. And believe me, I fully support that – you didn’t travel all that way or pay all that money to eat spinach. If you’re feeling a bit lethargic once you arrive back, here are a few little things for a post-holiday cleanse. IMG_6136

For your skin:

HoneySkin microdermabrasion scrub: perfect for scrubbing and stripping away the sweat, grime, and dirt you might have collected on your body. Entirely made with natural  ingredients, it’s both gentle and effective, and a great detox for your skin.

Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing face mask: After scrubbing, it’s time to recover. Your skin takes a beating during vacation – salt, sand, varying temperatures, and dehydrating alcohol might leave you looking a little newspaper-y. This mask is worth the money, and a little bit goes a long way. Spread a thin layer over your trouble zones and let it dry, then wash off with water and soap. Follow up with. . .

Sanctuary Spa moisture spray: Zap some moisture back into your face with this light but effective spritzer. If you’re still feeling dry. . .

BodyShop vitamin E overnight serum: this stuff provides a heavy dose of hydration, perfect for those extra-dry spots.

For your body:

Amazing Grass Green Superfood powder: Packed full of alkalizing superfoods like spirulina, spinach, broccoli, alfalfa, ginger, and lemon, this powdered magic can be added to juice, smoothies, or even plain water, although I wouldn’t recommend that. To be honest, it tastes like it advertises – powdered grass. But that little scoop of powder works to get things moving in your system and adds some potent vitamins into the mix.

Milk Thistle: a natural herb, helpful for detoxing the liver. And helpful after a week of wine, beer, and cocktails.

Turmeric: recently becoming a craze, turmeric is no secret to many people, who have used it for years given it’s magical properties. A strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and aids in battling heart disease, cancer, Alzheimers, arthritis, and even depression. Sounds pretty super to me. Turmeric is a main ingredient in curry powder, so start cooking up some curries, add a dash to scrambled eggs, or make a Golden Latte, the method de-jour. Just please don’t start drinking lattes out of avocados. Not every trend is worth following.

Kefir: Kefir is a fermented drink including valuable probiotics, those little guys that help promote healthy gut function and keep your system in tip-top shape. You may be missing a few after a diet heavy in fried foods, alcohol, and sugar. Other foods rich in probiotics include Kombucha, yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut.

And of course, gallons of water and a big salad is never a bad idea! What do you use for your post-holiday cleanse? IMG_7972
